I am the local (Seattle) stop organizer for The Collings Foundation when they visit Seattle (Boeing Field). I served in the Air Force ten years after WWII. When I first met the Collings Group I visited them to see the B-17. During the years that followed I fell in love with the B-24 and I can't get enough of of B-24s since. A local (Seattle) buddy of mine was a tail gunner on a B-24. After he retired he wrote a book that I recommend highly. "Eddie Picardo" "Tails Of a Tail Gunner". This book is a very good story about life in Seattle and being in the service during WWII. Thank you, Tony Caruso |

This was the greatest thing my Dad and I have done together. We flew the B24 out of Chino Airfield in So. Ca. Dads position was top gunner - flight eng. I got to fly his positions. My dad died shortly after this flight from cancer. I had an oppertunity to go up 2 years later with my 17 year old daughter. I showed her what Grandpa did. She was impressed. I bought stick time for this flight. What a thrill! We flew out of Bracket Field in La Vern So. Ca. This was outstanding. Just to be onboard one of these Bombers of WW2 is more then I can say. With my Daughter at my side watching my every move at the controls means so much to me. This is where my Dad did business a long time ago. I could feel all this as if I had been with him. Ladies & Gentlemen of the 43rd BG, 5th UAAAF. My congratulations on a very informative web site. Being a member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, I will enjoy visiting your site from time to time. In fact my reason for opening your site was to provide a confrere in the US with an informative and authentic sourse of informatin about the 5th Air Force. But may I offer a correction to the info about young Magee, who wrote "High Flight." I don't think he was ever promoted to a Flying Officer, he certainly was a Pilot Officer when he wrote the poem. He was amember of my old squadron, 412 Sqn. R.C.A.F. He wrote the poem in a letter to his mother, soon after completing a course that involved high altitude flight at R.A.F. Farnborough. He loved the Spitfire, the aircraft in which he was killed. It certainly is incorrect to refere to him as a "Flight Officer" that was a rank designation for a female officer of the Womans Branch of the R.A.F and R.C.A.F. I wish you continued success with your Association, I look forward to many years of good reading. A Merry Christmas to all Ray Stevens. |

MABUHAY! GREETINGS! I was refered to your great site by a colleague and also Mr. Al O'Brien, a visitor to our site, Lakbay.Net(www.lakbay.net.ph) which specializes in Philippine Heritage and Culture. I'm currently doing some research for a new subsite of ours on WWII historical places and events. We hope to have this up w/in 1Q2000 & feel that if you are visiting the Philippines, this special website could be a resource to assist you find and travel to your desired places of interest. Unlike the communities in the US, local veteran's associations & historic communities are not as organized nor as internet savvy. We have encountered that many WWII sites here, other than popular Leyte and Corregidor Island, are often overlooked or in disrepair. I would like to get your (and other sites like yours) feedback on how 1)which areas/destinations are of interest to veterans and their families, 2) what would you like to see/places of interest historical and non-historical in the RP, and 3) any other special pointers you may pass on to assist us. Our is an ambitious project but very important not only to the American service people but also the the thousands of Filipinos who have participated in WWI but have gone unrecognized. We want everyone to know thru the new site that the Filipinos have not forgotten the importance of this war on our soil. I invite you to visit our site if you are interested in learning about the Philippines. Also, feel free to send me a message at the above e-mail. Your comments and assistance for this project are most welcome and I look forward to your responses. Best regards, Tanya P. Kalakbayan Travel Systems, Inc FIRST.FILIPINO.ONLINE TRAVEL ACCESS. |

My dad flew a B24 in the Great War. He was from the 43BG. He was shot down and captured over Germany during his 3rd mission. He spent 11 months on a POW camp. He passed away at age 81. He didn't have a lot to say about jumping from a burning airplane but he did mention that he knew he was living on borrowed time. I often try to imagine what his experience was like but it leaves me breathless Thank you for serving up a wonderful page. |

I was searching for the address for an old Army friend of my Daddy's from the Korean and have no idea how I landed on this web page. I teach 1st grade in Ellisville, MS. We send out Valentine to area Veterans and any Veterans whose names are turned into from teachers, students, and others. We make a big deal about the importance of Veterans at our school and teach our children about the sacrifices that were made for their freedom. I would love to have some address to send some Valentines(handmade by 1st graders to some of the people I read about on this page. Our major fund raiser at our school this year is to raise money to help build our local Veterans'War Memorial in Laurel, MS. I very proud of my school and the interest they have taken in Veterans. We have been awed at the responses we have received back from some of the Veterans we have sent Valentines to. Many have said that is the first time anyone has ever thanked them for their service. You may contact me at my E Mail address or at Ellisville Elem. Lower 301 Deason St. Ellisville, MS 39437 Again with no idea how I ended p your web page, maybe fate? |

Those of you from the fifth probably already know of the works of Michael Claringbould. His books include the forgotten fifth, forty of the fifth and Black Sunday. I discovered him in australia while searching out my dad's exploits with the forgotten air force (his brother was with the eighth). You may find www.wanpela.com an interesting place to spend some time ,especially the history folder, it lists in day by day virtually all AAF activity in WWII. Keep up the great work, there are still many of us searching for our past out here and more "dads and grand dad's" getting on the web everyday. A big thank you from one guy who appreciates the unnoticed sacrifice made by Ken's Men. I salute you all. |

I was on Lt. Bauer's crew, the best pilot with the best crew in the 43rd or any where else in the Air Force. I flew 53 combat missions from March 1944 thru June 1945 and came back alive so I guess that speaks very well of Lt. Bauer's skill and professionalism. I was recalled during the Koreon War and then I made the Air Force my career. I contunued flying as Radio Operator and ECM Operator. I flew on many crews, but I always rated Lt. Bauer and his crew to be the best Airfoce Crew I was ever with. I'm just starting to explore the site. I know I will enjoy it. My compliments to all of you who have been been working so hard getting this information together. I enjoyed the 73rd addition of the Newsletter and will read it very carefully. |

dear mr. o'brien, i was so excited when i read your e-mail to the lakbay website. i'm a history teacher in the ateneo de manila high school, here in the philippines. my two interests are history, especially wars and battles, and mountaineering. these are the reasons why i got interested in your search for mt. malasimbo, the crash site of your brother's bomber in wwII. when i saw the name mt. malasimbo, i thought it sounds familiar. so, i immediately got my guidebooks, especifically, the "action asia adventure travel guide to THe Philippines". my guess was right, the book mentioned something about mt. malasimbo. it can be found on p. 213 of the book, on the part that discusses trekking in Puerto Galera. Well, it is quite easy, i think, to go to this place. as you will see on the book that i mentioned, if you can get a copy of this, mt. malasimbo is a part of a trail near puerto galera that is a recommended site for adventure travellers in the philippines. and in case, you do not know, puerto galera is one of the most popular tourism sites in the country. it is very famous for its dive sites and beaches, and many foreigners visit this place. so, it is really easy to get to mt. malasimbo, passing by puerto galera. also, there is a well-established mountaineering group in calapan, the capital town of mindoro oriental. the name of the mountaineering group is halcon mountaineers. this is the group that trekkers usually contact if they want to visit mountains in this province. they will certainly be a great help if you intend to visit mt. malasimbo. finally, i will be very interested to help you in anyway, in case, you plan to go here and visit mt. malasimbo. i'm really interested in history and mountaineering, and in fact, i have certain plans of combining these two in some of my activities. anyway, good luck in your search for mt. malasimbo. and i hope to hear from you. my e-mail address is jayhernando@altavista.com. P.S. A great American Jesuit priest used to teach in the Ateneo de Manila High School. His name is James O'Brien. He founded one of the great scholarship projects in this school, and he is well-loved by the people of this school. He died around 7 years ago. |

That was the Japanese delegation flying south to arrange the surrender. I have a set of 10 photos incl. the crew and passengers. If any of these are of interest to you let me know. |

While on active duty, I flew most of the recip aircraft single, twin and multi-engine. Had a UFO encounter while stationed on Johnston Island AFB in 1950. Now living quietly in this mountain village at 9,000 ft. msl, just off the 9th green on the highest golf course in NA....Will be attending the 43rd's Reunion in San Antonio in Aug; also my Pilots Class Reunion in Pampa, Tx and lastly The Air Weather Association Reunion at Las VegasinSept.. Great site! I was researching the 5th Air Force because my uncle, William (Bill) Spannbauer (Amsterdam, NY) was, I believe, a radioman and gunner on a B24 in New Guinea in WW2. He never shared stories with us, but I overheard him telling his buddies about returning from a flight and finding that the base had been attacked by Japanese soldiers while they were on a mission. I wish I had been able to get more information from him. The story of the 5th needs to be told. If anyone knows of my uncle, I would appreciate hearing from them. I missed WW2, but was in the service (Navy airdale!) when the Korean "police action" started, serving from'49 thru '53. We all appreciate the sacrifices made by so many so we can be enjoying what we have today. Keep up the good work. |

Thanks, Tracy, for the quick response. Very impressive repro. of the photo. Only problem was that there was no link back to the previous page, i.e., the "back" arrow was empty, that is, it couldn't be used to click back to the previous page. Small problem in light of the really great job you've done and are doing. Question: do you know if the 5th AF Memorial Assocition has a website? Thanks and thanks again, Doug |

Really enjoyed your site. I was a member of the 43rd Bomb Wing (Medium, with B-47's) at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ during 1954-58. Until now I never knew very much about the impressive WWII history of the 43rd. I recall that the squadron structure of the 43rd at DMAFB in the fifties was still the same, with a 63rd, 64th and 65th Bomb Squadron. We shared DMAFB with the 303rd Bomb Wing and the 803rd Air Base Group. Senior HQ on DMAFB was the 36th Air Division, all under 15th Air Force. DMAFB is also the site of the Air Force's aircraft boneyard, so every Armed Forces Day was a treat: during the fifties they could roll out one each of every U.S. combat aircraft from WWII and a few from WWI. We also had a few captured Japanese and German aircraft. Because of the availability of parts from the boneyard, DMAFB had the last B-17 in commissioned service, circa 1954. The captain I worked for was still current in the B-17 and when he took her up each month to get his time in, it stopped traffic on the base. You could see tears in the eyes of the guys from WWII. Thanks for bringing back all those memories. Jim Nolan 17 Beach Road Gloucester, MA 01930 |

MY FATHER IN LAW , PAUL STANFIELD FROM DANVILLE VA, ORIGINALLY FROM RIEDSVILLE NC DURING WWII, WAS A FLIGHT ENGINEER ON A B-24 IN THE 63RD SQ SEAHAWKS. THE PILOT OF HIS AIRCRAFT WAS BILL CANAVERA (SP) FROM CALIFORNIA. IN THE MID TO LATE '70'S THIS CREW STARTED AN ANNUAL REUNION AND HAS KEPT IT UP EVER SINCE. THE CREW IS SPREAD OUT ALL OVER THE COUNTRY BUT THEY ALL MANAGE TO ATTEND WITH THEIR WIVES. NOW AFTER TWENTY SOME YEARS OF REUNIONS AGE IS TAKING ITS TOLL WITH THE LOSS OF SEVERAL CREW MEMBERS. MY FATHER IN LAW DOES NOT HAVE A COMPUTER BUT I WILL ALERT HIM TO THIS SITE AND PERHAPS HE WILL CORRESPOND WITH YOU. HE DEARLY CHERISHES THOSE TIMES , EXPERIENCES AND FRIENDSHIPS. OVER THE YEARS HE HAS TOLD ME MUCH ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCES DURING WWII AND HE REMEMBERS QUITE VIVIDLY. HIS B-24 WAS PAINTED SOLID BLACK AND APPARENTLY WAS CHARGED WITH SHIPPING INTERDICTION. ALL MISSIONS WERE APPARENTLY QUITE LOW LEVEL AND SOME WERE 15 TO 20 HOURS IN DURATION. I KNOW HE WAS AT CLARK FIELD AND IE SHIMA AND BIAK AND OTHER BASES. i HOPE YOU HESR FROM HIM. |

i am hunting around on the net for info on usaf bases in qld. aust.during ww2. particularly in an area north (about 25 miles north of ipswich,50 miles north of brisbane, approx, known as mt tarampa, because of this feature) usaf base known to have been in existance, with an untitled photo of base/runway sighted.(in local shire offices).commemorative monunent/plaque in place at site but am yet to view to determine squadron/ group based there. photo shows approx. 12 aircraft on side of runway, bomb shelter (still in existance) infrastructure and vehicular tracks to top of mt. where radio aerials etc. in place. checked here as site contained papua new guinea info, which would presumably be within range?. any help, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated at my email address. will bookmark this page and return when i verify squadron/group i/d. sincerely andrew edwards. |

I am new to this site, but I am so glad to find it. My dad, 1st Lt. Robert "Bob" E. Grefe (nicknamed Sorrow) was a bombardier in the 63 SQ late in the war. He spent most of his combat zone time in the Phillipines and later Ie Shima. I know from his and other stories told during my childhood conversations and crew reunions that they flew some of the last bombing missions against Japan and were among the first to land there. His pilot was George Phillips and other crew members included Louis Comeau, Victor Pafundi, Don Brownell, Jim Johnson. When I get all of his papers I will be able to confirm more information--I know that I'll have quite a bit of documentation including photos. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who knew my Dad--he died in 1978, after 28 years as a Lutheran pastor, and the more I learn the more questions I wish I could ask him. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me learn his and your story. |

Back again! My uncle Henry Byron(Billy)Bowen was a tailgunner on a B-17.He was killed on 8Jan43 near Buna NG.I am looking for anyone who may have served with him. He was with the 65th(H). Through a researcher I learned that on 8Jan43 the 65th squadron on a joint mission with an Australian RAF squadron bombed a Japanese convoy and things did not go well. We lost a lot of planes and men that day. I would like to here from anyone who served in the 65th in late 42 early 43. My uncle died serving this country 18 years before I was born, but my children and someday my grandchildren will know his name.I will not let him be forgotten.I am very grateful for the sacrafice he and so many of my brother and sister veterans have made. |

I've already posted a request on the HeavyBomber site for info about Zeamer and Sarnoski's aircraft and crew. The same project for Smithsonian Press (aviation Medals of Honor) will deal with BGEN Ken Walker, whom I believe was lost in a 43rd B-17. His son Douglas is mentioned as contributing to this site, and I'd welcome contact with him or anyone else with knowledge of the crew and aircraft. |

Hello. I would like to compliment you an an outstanding website. I am a member of the 303rdBGA. My dad was an original crew member in the 427th. After the war in Europe he was assigned to the Phillipines and stationed at Clark Field. From there he sent for my mother in England and 10, or so months later I was born there. I am researching my fathers military career in the US Air Force. I am trying to find links and information that would cover Clark Field from 1946-1948. I have quite a few photos from that period that I would be glad to share with anyone who has an interest. Contact me at :palidin@worldnet.att.net . Thanks, I have book marked this site. PS. There is a description of the Zeamer and Sarnoski incident I found in a book entitled, " Big Bombers of WWII". I recommend it as a fine reference source on the "Heavys". Cheers. |

New Comment: Feb 17, 2001 A new book entitled "The Legacy of Daedalus" by Turner Publishing Co. has just been released. It is a marvelous compilation of "War Stories" coverng WW I thru Desert Storm. They are related by members of The Daedalians, the National Order of Pilots. Some humorous, some tragic, but all very interesting and invauable for Historians. I was asked to submit some of my experiences during WW II and one was selected for publication. I received my copy this week and after I began reading the accounts , I had difficulty putting it aside. Great reading fo r ALL crew members. |

And he made a point of saying he was in the "ARMY Air Forces." I guess so folks knew he was there pre-1947. Rick |

I am trying to get data together to build a 1:72 or 1:48 scale model (IPMS member) of a B-24 that my father (Milford Speelman) flew in as a radar operator, Nov 1944-Aug 1945. The only other crew member that I met was the co-pilot ("Doc"). Any help on specific tail numbers or a source to get decal quality print of the squadron tail patch would be appreciated. Also, which model(s) were most likely flown during that period. When did the red/white rudder stripes stop being applied (if ever)? Any details on the radar installation would be appreciated. My dad said they replaced the ball turret with a crank-down radar dome. If this project works out, I could duplicate the model and/or post details, pictures, decal sheet, for other interested people. Thank you, Larry Speelman |

I was on a mission over Korean waters and on my return to the base we saw the fires from the second atomic bomb in Nagasaki. We did not know what is was at the time. We were stationed in New Guinea, Clark Field and IE Shima. I was the Flight Engineer on a B24, who trained at Keesler Field,MS at the AM School. I went to the B24 factory school in Detroit,MI area. I later finished gunnery in Larado, TX. I crewed in Neb, flew high altitude bombing training in Idaho, flew low altitude training in Langley Field VA .We flew missons over China, Formosa, Japan and Korea. Our mission was Japanese shipping and fuel storage on the coasts. The pilot of my crew was William J Craig. Only five of us returned together after the war. Several died. Others developed illnesses. We had a great crew. We miss our good crew members who died in battle. We honor those of us who did not return. We who returned are blessed. |

Great but the contents is biased toward flying crews and nearly ignores the dedication of all the service organizations the supported the air crews. Not a complaint just a comment |

I found this site while searching for information on my dad, Ralph Milligan, only knowing that he flew in a B-24 Liberator and was in the 5th Airforce.I was amazed to find his picture on this site under "Joe's Crew". I had seen this picture many times as a child and remembered many of the names of those in the crew. |

I have only begun to research your site...a wonderful thing you are doing here... My family is from Hawaii...were there on Dec. 7, 1941, rarely talked about it and my Dad never said anything more than "I was just a pencil pusher" when it came to his time in the military. He's been gone 12+ years now and only recently have I become obsessed with his military service...and totally intrigued by the lack of information that I've been able to find on the 5th Air Force, 34th Statistical Control Unit. I have, however, recently found a listing of a publication on the 5th AF/34th SCU located at the Air Force Historical Research Center, Maxwell AFB, AL. I have yet to contact them and don't know when, if ever, I will get to Alabama...I don't even know how accessible the information is... My Dad was in the 5th Air Force, 34th Statistical Control Unit as well as the 7th Air Force, 9th Statistical Control Unit. He served from 27 April 1944 to 5 April, 1946 in the Western Pacific (Saipan) Campaign. I have some pictures taken on Okinawa and Ie Shima and 2 "souvenier" booklets from the 7th Air Force and the 9th Statistical Control Unit. If anyone would be interested in having scanned copies of anything, please let me know... |

Hello my name is Pete age 49 former Marine. I am somewhat of a WW2 buff, I enjoy e-mailing and talking to Veterans who served in WWII whether on land, air, or sea. I usually like to find out what you did, what rank you had, length of service, and what battles you fought in. I then try to find this information that I can download from the internet or I offer to pay for a few picture that you can get copy, I also try to get at least one picture of yourself and ask if you would sign it for me. I also will send you a SASE if that will help you out. I e-mail veterans from all nations that fought in WW2.This is strictly a hobby, I do not sell or publish to make a profit on anyones name. This is my way of having my own library on WW2 veterans and my tribute to those men, because we lose so many WW2 veterans every day all this history goes with them. If this is ok with you please e-mail me back. I would appreciate it. You guys are the men that I look up to as heroes. Heres something about me: I was born in San Francisco 1953. I have lived in California all of my life. I graduated from High School in 1972 and I joined the Marine Corps, stayed in for 5 years and became a sergeant. I was in the infantry O331 (M 60 machine gunner) or better known as a super grunt. After I got out, I went into the Army National Guard and was in the medical battalion for three years. After the service I went into the medical field in 1980. My first nine years were working the streets of East Los Angeles or better known as The Gun and Knife Club. I spent two years working in the trauma center in the emergency room. In 1989 my family and I moved out to the desert (Indio, near Palm Springs). From there I went to work for Eisenhower Medical Center also in the emergency room for the last 11 years. I spent five years as a volunteer fire fighter for the county of Riverside. Where I become a State Firefighter 1. My wife also works at Eisenhower for a private doctor. My wife and I have been married almost 23 years. I have a 17-year old daughter who is in her last year of High School and a 14- year old son who is in his first year of High School. As of April of this year after nearly 22 years of medical work. I quit and went back to school full time to earn a second degree but I am not sure what that degree will be. A few of my hobbies other than e-mailing and writing WW 2 veterans, I build model ships all from WW 2 period and nations. At last count I had at least 70 finished with at least 10 that I have not yet started. I have my own small library of military books mostly references now you know a little bit about me. |

My husband, Lt.Col.Orvis L. Cason, Jr. flew B-17's 1941-43 out of Australia. He was with the 5th AF, 64th Sq. 43rd BF. He'll be 82 in July. His pilot was Thomas Russell and co-pilot was George Wesson. Russell was killed during the war. My husband, Lee, has some memory loss now, mostly recent memory, and has other health problems, but doing pretty well. He would love to hear from anyone that knew him or his crew. Lee was the bombadier. He has a good scrapbook of pictures from that time, and a diary which I'm now typing up. |

I found the 43rd's website yesterday and was delighted. You have developed a wonderful collection of information and chronology of the group. My father was Russell Bragg and was assigned to the 43rd in October 1942 as a pilot. He was commanding officer of the 403rd squadron from May to August 1944 while the group was primarily staged at Nadzab. He returned to the States in September 1944. He retired from Strategic Air Command in 1958 and died in 1986. He was a very private man, but he did talk to me about some of his wartime experiences when I was a child. I have his 201 file which provides a basic chronological record of his military service. I would appreciate any information about my father's experiences in the 43rd/403rd from Kensmen who knew and/or flew with him. I am deeply grateful to my father and those who flew and served with him for the sacrifices they made to restore and preserve freedom in the world. Thank you for your assistance. My email address is rmb@regards.net. My phhysical address is 9840 Northeast Kingston Farm Road, Kingston, Washington 98346. |

I am a professional picture framer , by trade and I recently framed the WWII memoriabilia for Lt. Alton G. Boyd . Actually , I framed it for his Grand-daughter who presented it to Lt. Boyd's son for Christmas . After having had most of Lt. Boyd's memories and " The Things in the Box " that all GI's have , I feel a kinship and that I know the man from the relics of his past. Contact me with your e-mail address and I will send you a photo of what I created for him. What I would really like to find is a copy of the 43rd BG patch and the 403rd squadron patch. |
