Comments: My father, Thomas Whitt, served as a nose gunner with the 403rd. He passed away in December 1999 and never really talked of WWII. I felt that it was not my place to get him to talk about his memories if he were not willing to volunteer them. I regret not learning more about his experiences and memories. He left behind some great photos (very small), patches, in-flight log book, maps, metals, etc. He has a great photo of the crew from his B-24 in the classic pose of everyone out in front of the plane. I would love to share them with this website.

Comments: GREAT website!! My uncle was T/Sgt Hyman Silverstein. He was on the ill fated B-24D-85 "Pride of the Cornhuskers" Serial Number 42-40682 that crashed on takeoff September 7, 1943. The plane took off on a reconnaissance mission from 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby, then crashed at take off at 04:25 am. The aircraft crashed into a truck convoy on the eastern end of the runway, Fifty-nine men were killed and 92 injured from the Australian Army 2/33rd Infantry Battalion, D Comapny. These soldiers were in trucks awaiting orders to board C-47s for Nadzab via Tsili Tsili. Please honor his memory and that of the crew. If you Google " Pride of the Cornhuskers" you can read all about it on Justin Taylan's fantastic Pacific Wreck Database website.
